The COACH

As a high school & college coach and teacher, I have learned a good reliable basic overall philosophy that will never change. It is simple fair, easy to understand, and eliminates confusion within all sports.

  • Slow down, teach, communicate, be humble, and be respectful at all times.

  • All coaches must understand their personnel first, and then use your philosophy to fit the mold of your team.

  • Prepare appropriately for the opponent each week

  • Teach and build a simple philosophy with your players, so that they can master without a doubt.

  • Do the little things first.

  • Establish a solid foundation in everything you do (players, staff, plays, administration, etc.)

  • Build confidence in the players

  • In practice - keeping it simple to grab a large number of repetitions with each practice. When athletes have large numbers of repetitions, it creates confidence and allows athletes to perform at a high level in games without hesitations.

  • Teach secondary fundamentals; alignment and assignment

  • The athlete must be able to play the sport

  • Evaluate personnel and players regularly.

  • Each team should have players with speed, quickness, intelligence, mental and physical toughness.

The Musician

Professor James Sims — aka “SIMS ON SAX” — grew up playing the piano at the age of 9.

His piano teacher was an elementary school Nun who would painfully pluck your fingers with a wooden ruler for every wrong note played during lessons. After three years of sore fingers, Professor Sims saw a saxophonist named Vernard Johnson at a church function and instantly decided that the saxophone was his instrument of choice.  After years of self-practice and hard work and determination, Professor Sims slowly started to blow notes from his saxophone. By age 19 he was playing as a guest soloist throughout the State of California, and in other cities across the U.S.

Upon graduating from college and accepting his first full-time job at age 23, Professor Sims stopped playing the saxophone to pursue his new career in teaching and coaching sports. Since the new job was extremely time consuming, he did not pick up his horn for 25 years. But one day at a family function his cousin (pianist/organist) spoke some encouraging words about the gift of music. The next day he took the greenish moss/algae looking saxophone to the repairman for a complete saxophone cleaning/overhaul. Over the last 9 years, Professor Sims — aka “SIMS ON SAX” — plays his saxophone with so much joy and thanks! He knows about his unique gift of music and wants to share with those who will listen. Today, "I will never stop playing my saxophones again."
